Thanks to the art collector, Paul Marmottan, who donated his entire collection and house, this museum opened in 1934. It's located in a residential district near the Boulogne Woods. The turning point of this museum was probably the acquisition of Monet's 'Impression, Sunrise’. Along with other works of Monet continuously given by his son, Michel Monet, this museum houses one of the most rich collections of this great painter. We recommend it for those who love Monet even though you can also see his works at the Orangerie Museum or the Orsay Museum. Here, you will have better understanding why he is called 'the painter of light'.
The museum also holds other impressionist paintings such as Caillebotte, Degas, Manet, Pissaro, Sisley and Renoir, except during temporary exhibitions.
Principal works:
Monet 'Impression, Sunrise', 'Nemphéas', 'Walking near Argenteuil', 'Houses of Parliament', 'Rouen Cathedral', 'Saint Lazare'
